I know I can get great shots with my little Kodak.

However, I’ve been hankering after DSLR camera for a while. I can get action shots with the Kodak, but it’s not fast enough to catch the exact moment I’m aiming for. I’m sure that’s partly down to me, but my timing isn’t that bad. I can judge changeovers in flyball!

Half a second too late ...

There are various other reasons, like picture quality and having a really great lens, but it’s mainly for the dogs. As you would expect.

I have some very kind friends who let me play with their DSLRs, on occasion, and although I love Emma’s Canon EOS 400D (aka the Canon Digital Rebel XTi), I really love Cat’s Nikon D50. Which hasn’t been produced in forever.

So, the hunt goes on. From the reviews I’ve read, the D50’s replacement, the Nikon D40 seems to be held up at the best entry-level DSLR ever, worshipped by camera lovers everywhere, partially because it comes with an awesome kit lens. Unfortunately it’s also no longer in production, and the new equivilent D3000 is apparently a) terrible, and b) more expensive.

So, does anyone have any other suggestions? I will consider other options to the Nikon, I just really like their kit lens’.

What’s your price limit? She’s a very good editor too but I’m in absolute awe at someone I know who has the Nikon D80.

Amber Jade has D80, Brittany has the D40 I *THINK*. If not it’s the D60.

I’ve fiddled with a couple of Canon’s and I couldn’t tell you what make they were but I definately favour my Nikon. That might of course differ with a different camera but the biggest thing you have to remember is that once you get the camera, you won’t be upgrading to a different one, you’ll be upgrading the lense. So imo I would go for the D40 and by the biggest fuck off lense you can get 😛

I think I’m going to have to go and scrounge around the shops at Meadowhall or somewhere, and see if I can get hold of an end-of-stock D40.

What lens do you use, Cat? TBH, I’m looking to buy the cheapest decent body I can get, because then I can spend more on a decent lens. Having said that, I do need a kit lens that will last me the first couple of months – that’s why I’m angling away from the Canon, since the kit lens really isn’t that great (unless I can get a body/lens combo deal or something).

I have absolutely no idea of the name of my biggest lens but it says.. “AF(?i think, kinda scratched haha)-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED”
    any help? haha

Will be investing in a bigger better and shinier one soon hopefully but it does it’s job very well so I can’t say I’m in any rush at the moment.
Flyball shot from today for example:

I sharpened the dog slightly but that’s the only editing done (no cropping or whatever).

AF-S sounds about right 😉 I know the kit lens with the D40 is the 18-55mm, but you can get an 18-200mm which would probably cover every base I can think of. Is the 55-200mm the one you use for your agility/flyball pics?

  • Cat

Yep and anything else possible really, the beach pics and ones on the field etc are usually with that one. The kit lens would be good enough but obviously if I have a better choice I’ll go for it. Things like in the garden etc the big one isn’t great for though since you obviously need to be a distance away.

I really can’t fault it, and anything bad with my images is because I don’t really fully understand my camera lol, it’s certainly not it’s fault! I heavily rely on editing as opposed to special camera features etc so if you do get one don’t rely on me for that haha. But quite literally I don’t feel like I need to change much from it being a nice quiet setting, to agility/flyball, to then a gig or something. If any of that makes sense!

  • Leanne

That makes sense! And its really good to know. I don’t want to have to swap lenses every five minutes, but equally I do want something that can cover everything I want it to.

I can see a shopping trip sometime in the next few weeks!
