    The Team

Felt a little bit like I had my own personal team of flyball dogs this week at Thursday training. Kim and Mollie are both back to competition next weekend in Starters with another of our older but experienced dogs, Lucy, and two of our proper Starter dogs. Mollie was so excited to be back, she ran herself out over 7″ quite quickly but she’s sound and happy today. Kim wasn’t quite as stupid, she doesn’t have the muscle tone for flying over 7″ jumps anymore. She has a weird skipping stride on the way up to the box but I genuinely think it’s a striding issue; she’s spent her entire…

    Retirement Party (Wigton 2012)

Important things first: this was Kim’s last show. She was awesome, all happy and springy and running like an idiot and doing whatever she wanted. She had 2 clear rounds, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, and was just out of the placings in each. I really wanted her final win to get her up to Grade 7, she has been such an amazing agility dog and it does make me a little bit sad that her ‘status’ doesn’t reflect that. But she is eleven and a half now, and she is getting noticably slower at every competition, although she still clearly loves being there. My rough plan was…

    Training in the Park

I decided today we needed to get out and do some agility training elsewhere, so I loaded a jump, Kim, and Rio into the car. It’s finally feeling like May, no rain! No sunshine either, but it’s warm outside, enough that I can wear my crocs and give my poor feet a break. I rubbed the back of my ankles raw a few months ago, and the skin has not recovered yet. Doesn’t seem to matter what footwear I’ve got on, I still end up with plasters all over the back of my feet by the end of the day. Not great for running with the dogs. Rio did well,…

Finally something other than rain! Rio’s puppy training day sadly got cancelled; the high winds and downpours made being around the equipment unsafe, and I’ll admit I didn’t much fancy going out when I saw the state of the weather on Sunday morning. Hopefully we can find another training day some time soon. Today we mooched around Digley, with all the dogs. It’s getting increasingly difficult to take them all out together, because Dylan and Rio are off on exploration mode, and old dogs have a tendency to get left behind. On the other hand, Dylan is improving so much in his interactions with other dogs (or lack of), that…

    Puppy Tugger

I’ve been remotivating myself this week, so Rio and I have had some specific goals to work on. Waits, and Tugging! Her wait training is going reasonably well; I find waits really boring to train which is probably why Kim doesn’t have one at all anymore, and Dylan’s has deteriorated to almost nothing. Oops. We’re hitting the three-D’s this week (maybe because it makes me think we’re working on Apparition, which frankly sounds way more fun), Duration, Distance, and Distraction. I need to start practising this in new environments too, but … boring. I’ve been playing lots of tugging games at home, mainly switching between toys so that whatever I…

    Maundy Thursday … More Snow

The snow has stayed just long enough for some more photos. I think by tomorrow, or Saturday at the latest, it will be all gone again. The sun is out and the temperatures are on the rise. Kim is always happy to be in the snow, so much so that she will play race-chase games with Rio. So I get two happy, tired girlies. You don’t play too much with whippersnappers though, they need reminding who is in charge.

    Kim Explains

Kimmy, you are so happy and smiley! How can you possibly hate this adorable little munchkin of a puppy? Look how cute she is! Oh, I see.

    Drax & a Mollie Update

Mollie is much better. We still aren’t sure what is wrong but she’s has been to the vet, got herself some shots and some medication, and she’s improving dramatically. Still on lead walks due to the injury, but so much more herself. Just Dylan and Rio went to Drax, and I took Bailey as well. We desperately needed a height dog for our bottom team and Bails would also bring some much needed speed, so despite Emma being away in London she still got to come and play. It was fun running a little dog again as well! Dylan’s team got themselves a new seedtime but they ran like a…

    Remembering to Breathe

Today’s walk did not start out well. I took Dylan, Kim and Rio and stocked up on 1000 treats to reward Rio’s recall. We walked for 20minutes and Rio was appalling, barely recalling 50% of the time and haring off waaay out of sight. Cue stressed, tense owner. And then I realised what an idiot I was being. So I remembered to breathe, kept my head down, kept walking, and stopped calling her. I have learnt this lesson before, many times, but sometimes I have to be reminded. Rio and I were fighting and it was going downhill. I didn’t think she was checking in with me enough, and as…

    Ribble March 2012

Resultswise, not such a good show. We didn’t bring home a single rosette. It also rained consistently. Apart from that, it was awesome. I entered Kim and Dylan, and didn’t know if Kim would want to play or if Dylan would be able to. Saying I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement; we were all joyously happy to be there and rocking out and running fast and easy and loving every single second. I couldn’t have asked for a better day, even if we did just bring home a lot of Es and faults. Kim was first up in her C1-7 Agility, in which we had no chance against the…
